Can’t Remove Watermark in a Word Document? 7 Ways to Remove It!
If you are struggling because the watermark refuses to go away, then hopefully the watermark is inserted through headers, background images, shapes, or section formatting.
In this guide, I will explain why this problem happens and how to remove stubborn watermarks.
By following the methods explained in this guide, you can remove almost any watermark from a Word document without damaging your content.
So let’s get started!
Why You Cannot Remove the Watermark in Word
If you are trying to remove the watermark using the normal Remove Watermark option available in Microsoft Word, and you fail, then the watermark was inserted differently.
Let’s learn the reasons in detail!
Most commonly, the watermark is actually placed inside the Header area of the document. When Word inserts a watermark automatically, it usually stores it as a header object. If the header is locked or modified, the watermark may stay visible even after using the remove option.
Another common reason is that the watermark was added as a picture or shape instead of using the official watermark feature. When someone inserts a semi-transparent image or text box and places it behind the document text, Word treats it as a normal object. Because of this, the remove watermark option cannot detect it.
Sometimes the document contains multiple sections. Each section may have its own header and watermark. If you remove the watermark from one section, it may still appear in another section.
In rare situations, the document might be protected or restricted. This means editing features such as deleting objects or modifying headers are disabled.
Now, let’s know the ways to remove it!
Can’t Remove Watermark in a Word Document?

If you cannot remove a watermark in a Word document, it usually means the watermark is inserted through the header section, a background image, or a shape placed behind text. To remove it, open the Header area, select the watermark object, and delete it manually. If the watermark appears on multiple pages or sections, repeat the process for each section until it disappears from the entire document.
The following steps will help you remove it successfully.
Step 1: Try the built-in Remove Watermark Option
The first method you should try is the official Remove Watermark option in Microsoft Word. This is the easiest and fastest solution when the watermark is inserted using the standard watermark tool.
Open the Word document that contains the watermark. After the document opens, go to the Design tab located on the top ribbon of the Word window. In older versions of Word, you may need to open the Page Layout tab instead.
Inside the Design tab, you will find the Watermark option. Click on it to open the watermark menu. Word will display several preset watermark styles such as Draft, Confidential, and Do Not Copy.
At the bottom of this menu, you will see the Remove Watermark option. Click on it once.
If the watermark was added using the default watermark feature, it will disappear instantly from every page in the document.
However, if the watermark remains visible, it means the watermark was inserted differently. In that case, continue with the next step.
Step 2: Remove the Watermark from the Header Section
In most cases where the watermark does not disappear, the watermark is placed inside the Header section of the document.
To fix this issue, scroll to the top of the page and double-click near the top margin of the document. This action opens the Header editing mode.
Once the header area opens, you will notice that the watermark becomes selectable. Move your cursor over the watermark text or image until it becomes highlighted.
Click on the watermark to select it. You should see small selection handles around the watermark. This indicates that the watermark is an object placed inside the header.
Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
The watermark should immediately disappear from the page.
After deleting the watermark, click the Close Header and Footer option or double-click anywhere in the document to exit the header editing mode.
If the watermark still appears on some pages, the document may contain multiple sections. In that case, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Check for Watermarks in Multiple Sections
Some Word documents are divided into sections. Each section can have its own header and footer settings. This means a watermark might exist in one section but not another.
Scroll through the document to see where the watermark appears. If it shows up only on certain pages, the document likely contains section breaks.
Double-click the header area of a page where the watermark is visible. When the header opens, check whether the watermark object is present.
If you see the watermark, click on it and press the Delete key. Now scroll to the next section and repeat the same process.
Sometimes the header may display a message called Link to Previous. If this option is enabled, the header settings are connected to the previous section. Disabling this option allows you to edit each section individually.
Continue checking each section until the watermark disappears from the entire document.
Step 4: Remove a Watermark Added as a Picture or Shape
Sometimes the watermark is not created using the watermark tool. Instead, someone may have inserted a transparent image, text box, or shape and placed it behind the document text.
In this situation, the watermark behaves like a regular object.
Click anywhere near the watermark area and try selecting the image or shape. If it becomes highlighted, press the Delete key.
If you cannot select the object directly, open the Selection Pane. Go to the Home tab and click Select in the editing group. Then choose Selection Pane.
The selection pane will display a list of all objects present in the document. Look for items such as Picture, Shape, or Text Box.
Click on each object in the list to see if it highlights the watermark. Once you find the correct object, select it and delete it.
This method helps remove hidden watermark objects that are difficult to select normally.
Step 5: Remove Watermark from Background Settings
Another possible reason is that the watermark is added as a page background element.
To check this, go to the Design tab again. Click on the Page Color option and then choose No Color.
If the watermark was applied as a background effect, removing the page color may remove the watermark’s appearance.
This method does not apply to all documents, but it can help when the watermark is connected to page background formatting.
Step 6: Disable Document Protection
If the watermark still cannot be removed, the document may have editing restrictions enabled.
To check this, open the Review tab in Microsoft Word. Look for the Restrict Editing option.
Click on it to open the editing restrictions panel on the right side of the screen.
If editing restrictions are enabled, click Stop Protection at the bottom of the panel. Some documents may require a password to disable protection.
After disabling restrictions, try removing the watermark again using the previous methods.
Step 7: Copy Content to a New Document
If all other solutions fail, the final method is to copy the document content into a new Word document.
Open a new blank Word file. Then return to the original document and select all the content using Ctrl + A.
Copy the selected content using Ctrl + C.
Now paste it into the new document using Ctrl + V.
In many cases, the watermark does not transfer to the new file because it was attached to the original document’s header or background.
Once the content appears in the new document, save the file with a new name.
FAQs
Why does my Word document watermark not disappear?
A watermark usually remains because it is stored inside the Header section, inserted as a picture or shape, or applied in multiple document sections.
How do I remove a watermark from only one page?
You must create a section break and then remove the watermark from that section’s header. This allows you to keep the watermark on other pages while removing it from one page.
Why is the watermark behind the text and not selectable?
This happens when the watermark is inserted as a background object or placed inside the header. Opening the header section usually makes the watermark selectable.
Can document protection prevent watermark removal?
Yes. If the document has editing restrictions enabled, Word may block actions such as deleting watermark objects. Disabling protection allows you to remove it.
Does copying the document remove the watermark?
Sometimes it does. If the watermark is attached to header formatting, copying the text into a new document may remove it automatically.
