An external SSD is one of the fastest and most reliable storage devices you can use with a Windows computer. Many people use an external SSD to run a second copy of Windows 11 or Windows 10, test a new operating system, troubleshoot computer problems, or carry a portable workspace between different PCs. Compared to a traditional external hard drive, an SSD offers much faster boot times, quicker application loading, and better overall performance.
Booting from an external SSD may sound complicated, but it is actually a straightforward process when you follow the correct steps. The most important part is making sure your external SSD contains a bootable version of Windows and that your computer is configured to boot from the USB device before the internal drive.

Before you begin, make sure your external SSD is connected using a reliable USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2, or USB-C port for the best performance. Also verify that the SSD already contains a bootable installation of Windows 11 or Windows 10.
If it only stores files, your PC will not be able to boot from it.
Step 1: Prepare a Bootable External SSD
The first step is ensuring that your external SSD is actually bootable. Simply copying Windows files onto the SSD is not enough. The drive must contain a complete Windows installation or a properly cloned copy of your existing Windows system.
If you are installing Windows for the first time, you can use the Windows Media Creation Tool or another trusted Windows installation method to create a bootable Windows installation on the SSD. Alternatively, you can clone your existing Windows installation from your internal drive to the external SSD using reliable disk cloning software.
Once the installation or cloning process is complete, safely disconnect the SSD and reconnect it to verify that Windows recognizes it correctly. Open File Explorer, confirm that the drive appears, and make sure it has sufficient free space for Windows updates and future applications.
Preparing the SSD correctly is the foundation of the entire process. If the drive is not bootable, changing BIOS settings later will not allow the computer to start from it.
Step 2: Connect the External SSD Properly
After preparing the SSD, connect it directly to your computer before turning the system on. It is recommended to plug the SSD into a high-speed USB port instead of using a USB hub or extension cable.
A direct connection provides better stability and reduces the chance of boot errors. If your computer has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, always choose the faster USB 3.0 or newer port because it offers significantly better read and write speeds during startup.
After connecting the SSD, wait a few seconds if the computer is already running. Windows should detect the device automatically. If the SSD is not recognized, disconnect it and reconnect it using another USB port.
For desktop computers, the rear USB ports connected directly to the motherboard usually provide the most reliable connection during startup.
Step 3: Restart Your Computer and Open BIOS or UEFI Settings
To boot from an external SSD, you need to enter your computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings.
Restart your computer. As soon as the manufacturer’s logo appears, repeatedly press the key used to enter BIOS or UEFI. Depending on your computer manufacturer, this key may be F2, F10, F12, Delete, or Esc.
If Windows starts normally, simply restart the computer and try again. The timing is important because the key must be pressed before Windows begins loading.
Once inside BIOS or UEFI, you will see a settings interface that allows you to configure hardware, startup options, storage devices, and boot preferences.
Do not worry if the screen looks different from screenshots you have seen online. Every computer manufacturer uses a slightly different BIOS layout, but the boot settings work in a similar way.
Step 4: Change the Boot Order
Inside BIOS or UEFI, locate the Boot section or Boot Priority settings.
Here you will see a list of available storage devices. Find your external SSD in the list. It may appear with the manufacturer’s name, USB storage device, or the SSD model number.
Move the external SSD to the top of the boot priority list. This tells the computer to check the external SSD first whenever it starts.
Most BIOS interfaces display shortcut keys for moving devices up or down the list. Carefully follow the instructions shown on your screen.
Some newer computers also provide a Boot Override option that allows you to boot from the external SSD only once without permanently changing the boot order.
After selecting the correct drive, save your changes before exiting the BIOS.
Step 5: Disable Secure Boot if Necessary
Some computers use Secure Boot to protect the startup process. In certain situations, especially when using cloned Windows installations or older bootable drives, Secure Boot may prevent the external SSD from starting.
If your computer refuses to boot from the SSD even though it appears in the boot menu, return to the BIOS settings and locate the Secure Boot option.
Temporarily disable Secure Boot and save the changes. Restart the computer and try booting again.
If the SSD starts successfully, you can continue using Windows normally. Some modern Windows installations work perfectly with Secure Boot enabled, while others may require it to remain disabled depending on how the drive was prepared.
If you no longer need to boot from the external SSD, you can always re-enable Secure Boot later.
Step 6: Use the One-Time Boot Menu
Many computers include a One Time Boot Menu, which allows you to choose the startup device without permanently changing the BIOS settings.
Restart your computer and press the appropriate key during startup. On many systems, this is F12, although some manufacturers use Esc, F9, or another key.
The Boot Menu will display all available startup devices. Select your external SSD and press Enter.
The computer will boot from the SSD only for that startup session. The next time you restart the computer, it will usually return to the normal internal drive unless you select the SSD again.
This method is convenient if you only occasionally need to use the external SSD.
Step 7: Wait for Windows to Load
Once the computer begins booting from the external SSD, Windows will start loading just as it does from an internal drive.
The first startup may take slightly longer because Windows detects the connected hardware and installs any required drivers. This is completely normal.
After Windows finishes loading, sign in with your account and verify everything works correctly. Open Settings, File Explorer, and a few applications to confirm the operating system is running from the external SSD.
You can also check Disk Management or System Information to verify that the external SSD is currently serving as the boot drive.
If Windows starts successfully, you have completed the process.
Troubleshoot Boot Problems
If the computer does not boot from the external SSD, do not panic. Most issues are caused by simple configuration problems.
First, verify that the SSD contains a valid Windows installation.
Next, reconnect the SSD using another USB port and restart the computer.
Return to BIOS and confirm that the SSD remains first in the boot order.
If the drive still does not appear, update your motherboard firmware if recommended by your computer manufacturer.
You should also make sure the SSD is using a supported partition style such as GPT for UEFI systems or MBR for Legacy BIOS systems.
In many cases, recreating the bootable Windows installation on the SSD resolves startup issues.
