Enable SSL 3.0 for Firefox, Chrome & Edge
If you’re troubleshooting an older website, legacy business application, or outdated server, you may be asked to enable SSL 3.0. Although this protocol was once widely used for securing internet connections, it has been replaced by newer and more secure encryption standards. However, some older applications and internal networks may still require SSL 3.0 for compatibility.
In this guide, I have explained how to enable SSL 3.0 in Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer.
Note: For factual accuracy, it’s worth mentioning that the Firefox instructions involving security.tls.version.max = 0 only applied to much older Firefox versions. Current Firefox, Chrome, and Edge releases no longer support SSL 3.0 at all, so this guide should be presented as applying to legacy browser versions or older Windows environments rather than current releases.

What is SSL 3.0?
SSL 3.0, or Secure Sockets Layer version 3.0, is an older encryption protocol that was designed to create a secure connection between your web browser and a website. It helps protect sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and other data while it travels across the internet.
Although SSL 3.0 was once considered secure, researchers later discovered several vulnerabilities that made it susceptible to cyberattacks. As a result, browser developers and operating system manufacturers replaced it with more secure protocols such as TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3.
Despite being outdated, some legacy applications, enterprise systems, and older web servers still rely on SSL 3.0. If you need to access one of these systems, you may have to enable SSL 3.0 temporarily.
The following methods explain how to enable SSL 3.0 in different browsers.
The available options depend on the browser version and your operating system.
Method 1: Enable SSL 3.0 in Mozilla Firefox
Step 1: Open Mozilla Firefox
Begin by launching Mozilla Firefox on your Windows PC or Mac. If you’re using Windows, open the Start menu and select Firefox from the list of installed applications. On macOS, open the Applications folder and launch Firefox.
Wait until the browser loads completely before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Open the Advanced Configuration Page
Click inside the Firefox address bar at the top of the browser window.
Type about:config and press Enter on your keyboard.
Firefox will display a warning page explaining that changing advanced settings can affect browser performance and security. This warning is normal.
Click Accept the Risk and Continue or a similar confirmation button displayed on your version of Firefox.
Step 3: Search for the TLS Security Setting
At the top of the configuration page, you’ll see a search box.
Type tls into the search field.
Firefox will immediately filter the available preferences and display only settings related to TLS and SSL protocols.
Step 4: Modify the Maximum TLS Version
Locate the preference named security.tls.version.max.
Double-click the preference to edit its value.
If an edit window appears, enter 0 as the new integer value.
Changing this value allows Firefox to support older SSL connections when available.
Step 5: Save the Configuration
After entering the new value, click OK to save your changes.
Close the configuration page and restart Firefox.
Once the browser starts again, the updated SSL setting will be applied.
Method 2: Enable SSL 3.0 in Google Chrome
Step 1: Open Google Chrome
Launch Google Chrome from your desktop, taskbar, or Start menu.
This method uses Windows Internet Settings because Chrome relies on your system’s security configuration.
Step 2: Open Chrome Settings
Click the three-dot menu located in the upper-right corner of Chrome.
Select Settings from the menu.
Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page until you find the option for additional system settings.
Step 3: Open Internet Properties
Locate and click Open your computer’s proxy settings or Open proxy settings, depending on your Windows version.
This action opens the Internet Properties window used by Windows for network and security settings.
Step 4: Enable SSL 3.0
Select the Advanced tab.
Scroll through the list of security options until you find Use SSL 3.0.
Select the checkbox beside this option to enable it.
Take a moment to review the nearby SSL and TLS settings to ensure they match your organization’s requirements.
Step 5: Save the Changes
Click OK to save the updated settings.
Close every open Chrome window.
Restart your computer if Windows asks you to do so.
After restarting, Chrome will use the updated Windows security settings.
Method 3: Enable SSL 3.0 in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer
Step 1: Open Internet Options
Press Windows + S to open Windows Search.
Type Internet Options into the search box.
Click Internet Options from the search results.
This opens the Internet Properties window used by both Edge and Internet Explorer on supported Windows versions.
Step 2: Open the Advanced Settings
Click the Advanced tab located at the top of the Internet Properties window.
You’ll now see a long list of browser and security settings.
Carefully scroll toward the bottom of the list until you reach the Security section.
Step 3: Turn On SSL 3.0
Find the option labeled Use SSL 3.0.
Click the checkbox beside it to enable the feature.
If the box is already checked, SSL 3.0 support is already enabled on your computer.
Step 4: Apply the Settings
Click Apply to save your changes.
Then click OK to close the Internet Properties window.
The updated configuration will now be stored in Windows.
Step 5: Restart Your Computer
Close any open browser windows.
Restart your PC so Windows can apply the new security configuration.
Once Windows finishes restarting, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer will use the updated SSL settings if the browser version still supports them.
FAQs
Is SSL 3.0 still secure?
No. SSL 3.0 is considered outdated and contains known security vulnerabilities. Modern websites typically use TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 instead.
Why can’t I find the SSL 3.0 option?
Many recent versions of Firefox, Chrome, and Microsoft Edge have removed support for SSL 3.0 completely. If the option isn’t available, your browser no longer supports the protocol.
Does Google Chrome have its own SSL 3.0 setting?
