How to Create a Group in MS Teams in 2026?
Creating a group in MS Teams lets you collaborate with multiple people in a single shared workspace. A group in Microsoft Teams is called a team, and inside that team, you can create channels for different topics or departments. Each group or team can include members, files, chats, and meetings in one organized place.
Before creating a group, make sure you are signed in to your Microsoft account and have permission to create teams. In most organizations, administrators allow employees to create their own groups, but in some cases, this feature may be restricted.
Once you create a group, you become the owner. Owners can manage settings, add or remove members, create channels, and customize permissions. Members can participate in chats, share files, and collaborate on tasks.
In this post, I’ll show you the process to create a group, add members to it, and send chats to them!
How to Create a Group in MS Teams?

To create a group in Microsoft Teams, open the Teams app, click on the Teams tab, select Join or create a team, choose Create team, select a group type, name your group, add members, and click Create. Your new group will be ready for collaboration instantly.
By following the steps below, you will be able to create a group, add members, and start collaborating in just a few minutes.
Step 1: Open Microsoft Teams and Sign In
The first step is to open Microsoft Teams on your computer. You can launch it from your desktop shortcut, Start menu, or browser if you are using the web version.
Once the application opens, sign in using your Microsoft account. This could be your work, school, or personal account, depending on how you use Teams. After signing in, you will see the main dashboard of Microsoft Teams, which includes tabs such as Activity, Chat, Teams, Calendar, and Files.
Make sure you have a stable internet connection before proceeding. Without proper connectivity, the group creation process may not complete successfully.
Step 2: Navigate to the Teams Section
After signing in, look at the left side of the screen. You will see several menu options. Click on the Teams tab. This section shows all the teams or groups you are already part of.
At the bottom of this section, you will find an option called Join or create a team. Click on this option to proceed. This page allows you to either join an existing group using a code or create a new one.
Since you want to create a new group, select the Create team option.
Step 3: Choose the Type of Group
After clicking Create team, Microsoft Teams will ask you to choose the type of team you want to create. You will usually see options such as Class, Professional Learning Community, Staff, and Other.
If you are creating a group for workplace collaboration, choose the Other option. If you are a teacher or student, you can select Class. Each type offers slightly different features and permissions.
Next, you will be asked to choose the privacy level of the group. You can select Private or Public. A private group means only invited members can join. A public group allows anyone in your organization to join without an invitation.
Choose the privacy level that suits your needs and continue to the next step.
Step 4: Enter Group Name and Description
Now you need to provide basic details about your group. Enter a name for your team or group. Choose a name that clearly represents the purpose of the group. For example, you can name it Marketing Team, Project Discussion, or Study Group.
Below the name field, you will see a description box. Write a short description explaining the purpose of the group. This helps members understand what the group is about and how they should use it.
After entering the name and description, click the Create button. Microsoft Teams will now create your group.
Step 5: Add Members to the Group
Once your group is created, you will be prompted to add members. In the search box, type the name or email address of the person you want to add. Microsoft Teams will show suggestions based on your organization or contacts.
Select the person and click Add. You can add multiple members at once. After adding members, you can assign roles. By default, all added users are members, but you can change some to owners if you want them to help manage the group.
Owners have additional permissions such as editing settings, adding channels, and managing members. Choose the roles carefully based on your requirements.
When you finish adding members, click Close. You can also add members later if you prefer.
Customize Your Group Settings
After creating the group and adding members, you can customize settings to suit your needs. Click on the three-dot menu next to the group name and select Manage team.
Here you can modify settings such as permissions, guest access, and member roles. You can allow or restrict members from creating channels, editing messages, or adding apps.
Customizing settings helps you maintain control over the group and ensures smooth collaboration. Take a few minutes to review these options and adjust them according to your preferences.
Create Channels Within the Group
Channels help organize conversations within your group. For example, if you have a project team, you can create separate channels for planning, design, and updates.
To create a channel, click the three-dot menu next to the group name and select Add channel. Enter a channel name and description. Choose whether the channel should be standard or private.
A standard channel is visible to all members of the group. A private channel is accessible only to selected members. After entering details, click Add.
Channels make communication more organized and help keep conversations focused on specific topics.
